Description
What a weird name he had, Ramgolam! While he was in his early teens, one day he asked his Ma (mother) who had given him such a name. His mother replied, ‘Could be your Dada (grandfather) or your Dadi (grandmother) or it could even be your own Bap (father). His father was called Sheucharan; then, why did he have such a queer name?
The question disturbed him a lot. One day, summoning courage, he confronted his grandfather. He was quite scared of him. He had a monstrous mien. On his dark face hung a whacking moustache, which he used to wax. The two ends of the moustache curled up, creeping by the two sides of his flaring nose. The eyes blazed. With his flamboyant moustache, wide nose, charcoal blackness, and blazing eyes Gurucharan had a minatory appearance. He was the Sarder (headman) of the colony.
